Bullsh*t plus some

Finally told my parents about my tattoo. My dad was pretty cool about it, a little upset, but cool and my mom threw a freaking hissy-fit. Aparently, despite the fact that I'm 21, I'm not capable of making such decisions on my own and I should have discussed it with her. Like any type of conversation would have wound up with her going, "I understand sweetie, why don't you just go get that ink done tomorrow." And now she's insisting that I get an HIV test because she got her medical statistics from the 80's and won't listen to the fact that they steralize everything at a good shop. All the arguments I hear are the same, "You won't like it in 30 years." "That'll look good when you become a PTA member." Like I'd go to a damn PTA meeting in a spagetti strap! ARGH!
Needless to say, I'm a little pissed and this was the best place I could think to vent.

Woo venting!
My mother once said "I've never found anything that I would want on my body forever."
I don't have a tattoo but in her opinion she just hopes I make sure I want to stick with it for the rest of my life.
My father would freak because apparently women that have tattoos are slutty... so yeah...
He says the same thing about female smokers... <<; And for that reason he will never know that I've smoked.

Anyway goodluck! And you tattoo rocks!

ha - I know how ya feel... it's just like any other steriotype there is.... tattoo's must give you HIV or some other blood transferred sickness/disease.... no matter how much you've looked into the cleaning and sterilizing procedures of the shop you're interested in.... since they're in the tattoo business they must lie about things like that cause who can trust tattoo artists?

*sigh*

I wish people/parents would just do their homework on stuff like this... but usually they wont because they're scared of it or of the people that do the work... I guess all we can do is put up with it the best we can... I have 7 tattoos and 95% of my family hates tattoos.

Don't worry. I'm 26 (almost 27 Jan. 29) and my mom still likes to tell me I need to talk to her before I do anything major. Which is her way of saying she'll tell me what to do. I ignore her for the most part unless it's actually important. I wish I was brave enough to get a tattoo but I'm scared to death of needles. I'd get a blue butterfly.

That's the problem with the world today. Young people aren't treated like adults, due in part because we have invented adolescence and seem to keep extending its duration. Some places you finish at 16, some 18, some 21. As far as I'm concerned, when you hit puberty, you're an adult, and should be treated as one in every regard (except for punishment, punishment does not solve anything, only restitution can do that).

Thanks. I just feel that I should be treated like an adult, especially if I live on my own. My mom always said 'Under my roof, you follow my rules' and I was okay with that but she seems to feel like her roof extends over my apartment.

I don't mind discussing things with her, but only if she'll stop passing judgement on my decisions, which she won't. I guess a mom can't ever really accept that her kids are grown.

Yeah. Every argument I made about the fact that everything is sterilized or individual use, she pretty much ignored. She used to be a nurse (which really is what makes this so bad because she was a nurse in the 70's and 80's) so she's got this horrid concept of tattoo shops and what they used to be but has no idea about current practices.
No tattoo shop that spreads disease would be allowed to stay open.

I think my father also has the same idea about women with tattoos, but he knows I'm not so maybe that helps.
I understand that I may not like it in 30 or 40 years, but I have considered that. I tried to explain that to my mom and all I got was 'and you still got it?' kind of reaction.
